Just like people, pets will sometimes need first aid. Here are some of the basics to keep in mind:

  • Keep a pet aid kit on hand that includes items such as bandages, scissors, tweezers, and hydrogen peroxide.

  • Learn basic CPR for pets in case of emergency.

  • Keep your pet's vaccinations and health records up to date and in an easily accessible place.

  • Keep the number for your vet, an emergency vet and the SPCA nearby. (Bethal SPCA Emergency Number: 072 573 3122)

  • Know the signs of shock, heat stroke and hypothermia and how to treat them.

  • Learn how to properly restrain your pet in case of injury or illness.

  • Be familiar with common poisonous plants and foods and keep them out of reach of your pets.

  • Be familiar with the signs of a common illnesses and injuries, such as broken bones, cuts, and bites, and know how to care for them.

  • Never give your pet any medication without consulting your vet first.

It's important to remember that these tips are for emergency situations and it's always best to consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible in case of any injury or illness.
