Bethal SPCA
The Bethal SPCA does not give away animals nor do we sell animals – animals are ADOPTED from us.
As per the National Council of SPCA rules, all animals adopted from the Bethal SPCA must be:

Sterilised to prevent them from either having (or siring) any unwanted litters.

Vaccinated to safeguard them from contracting diseases such as distemper, rabies, or parvovirus.

Dewormed to assist in the elimination of internal parasites.

Dipped if needed to ensure that there are no external parasites.

Microchipped.

Additionally, the adoption process includes time, administration, and resources of which we are always in short supply and thus we do also charge our own R250 administration fee.
These are the ONLY costs that prospective owners are paying for whenever they adopt an animal from the Bethal SPCA. The actual animal, including its food and boarding while at the SPCA is for free!
If you take into consideration that to sterilize a dog at your local veterinarian can cost anything from R650 to R2000, vaccination is upwards of R450 and getting microchipped is between R250 and R450, it quickly becomes apparent that the adoption fee we charge to adopt an animal, covering all of these expenses – and more, is not expensive at all.
Our current adoption fee is R1,250 for a dog and R650 for a cat which is inclusive of the administration fee. *Please Note our adoption fee is subject to change without notice as it is based on the prices that we are charged by our current suppliers.
Our ADOPTION FEE includes the following:

Sterilization

Vaccination (Canine 5in1 / Feline 3in1)

Rabies Vaccination

Internal Parasite Control – Deworming

External Parasite Control – Tick & Flea Treatment and
-
MicroChip (Registered with Identi-Pet)
The SPCA has a saying that goes – ‘owning an animal is a privilege and not a right’ and the animals that come into our care are either strays that have become lost or been abandoned as well as cats and dogs that are unwanted and are handed over to SPCAs; and of course, animals that have been neglected and ill-treated and removed by SPCA Inspectors in order to find new loving homes where they will never again be subjected to any form of ill-treatment. We take this huge responsibility very seriously and Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals cannot permit any of these animals to go to any homes where they will be anything else but loved and cared for – we cannot be part of letting these animals down.
The Adoption Process
Step 1: This is very different to choosing a gift that can be switched off and packed away when the novelty has worn off. It is very different to buying a garment that can be handed to the local charity bargain shop when it’s a few years old and just doesn’t suit your lifestyle anymore: – although that’s what many people effectively do when the novelty of having an animal wears off or their circumstances change so, please first ask yourself the following questions…

Will there be someone at home to give sufficient quality time to your dog?

Do you have sufficient space for a dog?

Does your lease/complex allow you to keep a dog?
-
Are you prepared to exercise your dog sufficiently?

Is there open space either near your home or that you are prepared to drive to where you are allowed to exercise your dog if your grounds are not big enough?

Can you afford veterinary fees?
-
Are you prepared to give up time to ensure that your dog has the necessary training to socialise and to learn to obey basic commands like “sit” or “stay”?

Do you know that some types of dogs are noisier or more energetic than others?

If you decide to adopt a puppy, are you prepared for some damage in your home (“toileting” accidents or chewing items, for example)

Do you have the time to groom a dog properly or can you afford grooming fees?
-
Can you afford to feed your dog properly – and we do mean “properly” – not makeshift diets or leftovers!

Do you appreciate that dogs, like people, grow old and may need special care and attention later in their lives?

If you cannot leave your dog with responsible relatives or friends when you go on holiday, can you afford the cost of boarding kennels?

Are you prepared to love and care for a dog all its life, which is often more than ten years: – and not just when it is a cuddly puppy?

Step 3: You will be required to complete an application to adopt form in person at our office (or you may download and print the form below to bring with you) once you have selected an animal that is available for adoption.
With your application you will be required to bring the following:

Proof of residence.

Identity Document, Drivers Licence or Passport.

If you are renting, a letter from your landlord confirming that you are permitted to adopt and keep the animal on the property. We do not book or reserve animals unless the above is handed in. We work on a first come, first serve basis.
Step 4: When adopting a dog, a meet and greet with your family, children and current dogs is vitally important. The meet and greet must be conducted before we can do the home inspection. The meet and greet is to ensure that the dog you wish to adopt gets along with your family, children, and current dogs.
Step 5: Our inspector will come to your home to conduct a home inspection and offer advice on adopting a pet. The Inspector will take note of the following:

Condition of other pets

Whether adequate shelter is provided

Where the animal will sleep at night
-
Size of property/height of wall
-
Ensure that the property is fully enclosed
We normally do the home inspection within 24 hours of receiving your completed application, however in some instances in may take a bit longer as our main priority is to attend to animal abuse cases first.
Step 6: Once your application and home inspection are approved you will be requested to pay the adoption fee in full. You have 7 days (1 week) to do this. Once the payment is received the animal will be sterilised, de-wormed, microchipped and vaccinated. You will be contacted to collect your adopted pet the day following the sterilisation.
Step 7: You are now at the end of the adoption process and your new “fur baby” can go to their new forever home after you have completed the Adoption Contract in person at our office which is normally done when you collect them.

OFFICIAL SPCA ADOPTION CRITERIA
The following are also considered as criteria for adoption:

You must be over 18 years of age to adopt.

Your property must be fully enclosed.

You must be able to afford the services of a private vet and have your own transport to take your pet to the vet.

By-laws must be adhered to. This includes stipulated restrictions on the numbers of animals permitted per property.
OUT OF AREA ADOPTIONS

We also allow out of area adoptions, but applicants need to be able and willing to travel to our kennels in person to meet or collect the animal(s). The local SPCA in your area will then be asked to conduct a PRE-HOME INSPECTION on our behalf.

If there is no SPCA in your area, we will not be able to adopt an animal to you.
